My Apology

What’s up yard?! I know I’ve been gone for about two weeks but my last blog and radio interview sparked a little controversy so I wanted to come on here and quelch it! My last blog about some of Stephon Marbury’s actions, combined with a radio interview that I did, have been misinterpreted by some as speaking out against homosexuality. I’ve received some comments and so have the Wizards about it. I just wanted to take a time out and let you know that no disrespect was intended. I was just trying to have fun with a crazy situation. I don’t support or condemn homosexuality and I believe in everyone making choices for themselves. If it doesn’t affect me, I don’t really care. I hope no one was offended because I wasn’t trying to come off like Tim Hardaway.

Alright Yard, just had to get that off my chest. Stay tuned because my next blog is actually going to be a vlog showing my preparation and what I’m doing workout wise to get ready for the upcoming season.

No apology necessary in my opinion. Why is hinting that someone might be gay an insult? If someone is offended by a hetero calling a person gay, then he/she must be ashamed of it. If you're ashamed of your actions, then you probably shouldn't be doing it.

Love you dude. I have been taken up for you on other blogs. It is might big of you to apologize and I for one didn't take it negatively and knew you were just funning. But, in this "politically" correct age we are in you just about have to measure every word that you say. I like you could care less about the issue one way or the other because it doesn't affect my being at all. But, I hear you and thanks for being man enough to straighten it all out and offer an apology whether needed or not. Hopefully now, people will let this matter rest and we can get to all of the other goodies you have to say. All though I do have to say, now you can see what Gil went through when blogging. LOL!

I can see where, from your public platform, it doesn't help things to have you joke about being gay like it's a bad thing, but I agree that what you said is a far cry from Tim Hardaway, who was basically preaching hatred. But think of it this way: don't you think someone can be racist without being hateful? If you were a kid growing up gay and having a hard enough time as it is, and you were a Wizards fan, and you heard the one of the players say what you said, you'd probably feel pretty hurt by it.

Anyway, I'll gladly forgive you if you sign a big extension at a bargain rate that gives the team flexibility to keep adding quality pieces. Love to see you in a Wizards uniform until you're Dikembe's age.

I was just joking about the contract, though I do want to see you stay in DC. But you deserve a raise. You have definitely outperformed your contract . Hopefully this year will be different with the new system, but in the past, without you, this team would have given up 200 points a game. And you got less minutes because I guess you didn't flail your elbows around enough after each rebound, like this one other guy who used to be on the team. Remember that guy?   DCTarheel, i never meant to offend anyone and my comments aren't really pointed at gay or bisexual people. my comments really were pointed at the foolishness of marbury's behavior, and who people in my field feel comfortable dressing around. Who we as athlete's feel comfortable dressing around speaks to our insecurities but should not be seen as offensive to homosexuals.

It is a free country Brendan, and whether I agree with you or not, I appreciate your bravery in coming onto a website like this and expressing your opinions.

It is not often you find an athlete who is willing to go out on a limb and talk about the issues that are on people's minds. Even the one's that people are afraid to touch at the risk of being 'politically incorrect'.

Although I am in the camp that the remarks were hurtful, who am I to tell you what you can say or not say.

I hope this doesn't deter you from talking about other sports related issues.

Other athletes keep mum because they are worried about losing sponsors.

One last point. The clip where marbury is crying, right before that he was talking about the death of his father and the song he was listening to made him emotional after talking about it. The guy rubbing his shoulder was his own brother. This is the problem with cut and edit. People don't bother to check the context or reason for anything and just go by whatever they see.

I don't know if anyone close to you has died before, but I guess if they have and you started crying after talking about it and your brother started rubbing your shoulders, you would have no problem with me saying that's equal to gay porn right? And if you do have a problem with me saying that, I can say that you're just being too sensitive right?

My first semester in college (back in 1982) I had a black roommate (we'll call him Etan). At the end of the semester I went to see my grandfather who was absolutely flabbergasted that I could live with a black person. One of the things that he found inconceivable was that I could share my personal space with "someone like that," by which he meant, I'm sure getting undressed as well as sleep peacefully knowing that the guy across the room was black.
He didn't "support" racism, wasn't a member of the KKK, and probably thought it was just a harmless joke when he speculated that I had to be a n-lover to accept the dormitory situation. I ended up walking out on his racist ass and only saw him one other time in the next 20 years before he committed suicide.
I hope things work out differently for you.

The problem with your "joke" and why it offends me is because you assume Starbury's weird actions are the actions of a gay person. Not every strange acting person is a homosexual. There are probably numerous "normal" acting people you have met who are gay and you had no idea, like Kevin Arnovitz, the dude who wrote the article that was linked to above.

There is a problem when you assume a strange acting male getting his shoulders rubbed without a shirt on is gay. you can say it's a joke, but i don't find it funny, i find it offensive to gay people.

Also, please explain to me what bothers you about dressing around gay males. You dress around female reporters you don't find attractive right? what is the difference?

Yes it should be over but some people just can't let it rest. I say don't apologize or explain yourself anymore. You have already done that and there is no more you can do or say. Some will be satisfied others won't. As for the negative posts, let it ride my man, just let it ride. Changing the subject, I hear Gil was shooting the lights out at the Goodman league last Friday. Glad to see it but I hope he doesn't play there too often because I would die if hurt himself over there.

  first off, i'm gay. secondly, i'm not easily offended. your comments initially rubbed me slightly the wrong way, but i didn't think they were a big deal. however, i must say i'm quite impressed with the fact that you are engaging in intelligent dialogue. very impressive. incidentally, i would definitely not feel comfortable showering around a gay guy either if i were straight. that's certainly a natural reaction.

yesterday I cried for hours! hours I tell you...all because you hate me - a gay. Well, this morning Francis and I went for Starbucks and to get mani-peds. We talked a lot abotu this situation and whether or not we should give up our Wiz tix package this year (Francis is going to be down in Miami for a few months this year not to mention I do not like the new gold uniforms!) but in the end - we decided to stick with you Hay. ay brendan did you put them hammers to etan head? i never understood how they had you and a midget fighting for minutes. anyways us true wiz fans got to witness both of you get starter minutes, and you looked like a vet, and etan just looked like a stocky midget that coudn't play center and all he was good at was stealing rebounds from his teammates and flailing his arms like a madman while doing it. i'm happy etan is gone. as for your comments. fuck these people that are replying. speech and language is something that is manmade and only affects people that let it affect them. think of it this way, before any language was created humans was going around grunting and groaning, but since some genius had the idea to make up vocabulary there were words made to offend people. im black, and i don't get offended by the word nigger, i get offended by the person behind the word, because i know their intent isn't good towards me. anyways there are certain cultures that are undeniable. if you see a person walking on the streets with their pants saggin, and a fitted on you can say they are acting black because thats an actual part of the current culture, and a grown ass man with his shirt off dancing like a stripper is acting gay because thats part of the gay culture.

stay up haywood. dunk on dwight next year and show that he isn't the only good center in the east. guy can't even make freethrows. just palm the ball and guide it in lol.

Hey Brendan - I'm all late and just catching up on everything, the video, ur first blog and now this one.

The fact of the matter is this, MANY people were prob thinking the same thing you were but didn't have the guts to voice their own opinions - shoot, if u look @ the youtube comments, u see that many of the responses are similar to urs - but just because ur in the spotlight its a big deal.

In my opinion, u spoke ur mind and then came back to clarify ur statement - that's classy on ur part - folks wont let stuff die down until the next news story - being a celebrity must suck!

Anyway, I read ur tribute to MJ and as u said, he was "often misunderstood". I guess we cud say the same for Stephon.

Let's just hope the dude gets some help.
