Devin Haney vs Ryan Garcia ’40 Days’ Episode 3 Recap
Sipa USA

As we approach fight night, DAZN Boxing released the final episode of ‘40 Days’, which followed WBC super lightweight champion Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) & Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) during their training camps. How would both fighters end the docuseries, and will it be in a way that raises the anticipation level for Saturday night?

The final episode of ’40 Days’ begins in Dallas, TX, with the voice of Chris Mannix in the background discussing the upcoming fight and how Garcia’s mental health issues have increased as the fight gets closer. Then, a collage of voices is heard as they give mixed reactions to how Garcia’s mental health has been playing out in the public the last few weeks. Garcia is shown entering the gym, and while sitting on the ring apron, he mentions how his moves are calculated and says something that stands out. “People can play dumb, but the truth is right in front of your face. They’ll scoot past the boxing videos I do and focus on anything that would make me look manic (depression).

Then it goes to his trainer, Derrick James. This is the first time we hear from James in this 40-Day series. James said “What I think people should know about Ryan is that he does zone in and will work hard. People get confused with reality and entertainment. I just focus on what he does in this building. I don’t even think about all of the other stuff. I told Ryan ‘When you come into this building, I don’t want to hear anything about no internet’. We are focusing on becoming a world champion.”

The cameras then focus on Garcia and James doing some workout drills, and Garcia puts on headgear as he begins the day’s sparring session. Garcia admits that he has been more of a “natural instinct” type of fighter but that James has taught him to be more technical. In this third episode, James talks far more and points out that Garcia can’t let “Devin be Devin.”

Garcia is then shown entering a music studio, where he begins to record music. He is seen working with another artist in the booth and goes into what music does for him. Garcia said that Universal Records reached out to him, signed a partnership deal, and he is now making music.

After spending the first six minutes on Garcia, the DAZN crew heads to Las Vegas, NV, where Haney is shown driving his Rolls Royce. Haney says he had a lot of respect for Garcia at one point but now has lost all of it. He goes into the process (of training) and how the pain and hunger leading up to fight night is fun for him. Haney said he’s been doing it so long that it’s second nature for him.

Haney is then shown doing boxing drills as a trainer holds the mitts at the Top Rank Gym in Las Vegas. His father, Bill, is then highlighted, and his background is discussed, including his jail stint and religion. Bill Haney said, “It’s been Devin Haney vs Everybody from the very beginning” when asked about the rise of his son in the sport of boxing. Bill and Devin discuss the fight and Devin points out that Garcia still makes some of the same mistakes from the amateurs, which he will expose.

Afterward, DAZN returns to Dallas as Garcia and James head to the local Boys & Girls Club to put smiles on kid’s faces. This specific Boys & Girls Club in Oak Cliff was where James first learned how to box, and it had a special place in his heart. Garcia didn’t know that but welcomed being able to give back to his trainer’s home. James would go into his upbringing and some of his challenges.

Then, the episode goes back to Las Vegas, where Haney is at the supermarket, and he explains that he is giving back to a family in need and he does it year-round. Haney then delivers the groceries to the family’s home. The woman who received the groceries and a 400-dollar gift card admitted to Haney that she had just lost her job and was thankful for what he did.

The episode finished with video clips of both past & present day from Haney & Garcia as the narrator builds towards what looks to be an interesting fight night on April 20 live from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. You can order this event on DAZN PPV and PPV.com.
