Billy Joe Saunders’ eye was left in quite the state after an uppercut from Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez left him with a fractured eye socket.

Saunders will have headed into the unification bout with high hopes and even bigger intentions, but despite a commendable display throughout, one shot from Canelo did the damage, with the English fighter eventually being pulled out by his corner.

As reported by DAZN, Eddie Hearn revealed post-fight that it was not Saunders’ decision to quit the fight, rather his trainer’s, with his eye socket having been left busted and swollen completely shut.

See below if you need any further convincing as to the implausibility of BJS continuing. He wouldn’t have been able to see a thing, with career-ending damage a possibility if he were to fight on, especially against someone of Canelo’s calibre.

There is no shame to losing to Canelo, especially in such unforeseeable circumstances. Assuming BJS makes a full recovery, he’ll be back stronger – and who knows – we might even get a second fight.
