Report: Vanes Martirosyan told his wife not to attend fight with GGG
Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Vanes Martirosyan seemed to know what he was in for leading up to Saturday night’s bout with Gennady Golovkin.

Martirosyan was knocked out by GGG in the second round of their middleweight title fight at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif., quickly getting crushed after putting in a respectable showing in the first round.

After the fight, HBO announcer Jim Lampley said that Martirosyan told his wife not to attend the fight out of fear that it would not end well. This holds even more significance considering that Martirosyan fights out of Glendale, Calif., which is less than an hour away from Carson, meaning it would have been an easy trip for her to make.

Keep in mind that Vanes had not fought for nearly two years before accepting the bout. He took it on short notice after Golovkin’s fight with Canelo Alvarez fell through due to Canelo’s failed pre-fight drug tests.

Few expected Martirosyan to be competitive in the bout, so the outcome was not surprising. Even Vanes was not expecting things to go well.
