Ex-Kentucky star Tyler Ulis in head-on car accident
Tyler Ulis Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports

Former Kentucky basketball star Tyler Ulis was in a scary car crash over the weekend, but emerged in decent shape, all things considered.

Ulis was traveling south from Detroit to Toledo on Interstate 75 on Friday night/Saturday morning. Another driver was traveling north in the southbound lane and crashed into Ulis head-on, Tyler’s father James said.

The former Wildcats point guard suffered a broken left ankle and set to undergo surgery on Wednesday. He also had a bad cut on his left leg and scratch on his face, James told Kentucky.com.

Kentucky coach John Calipari sent a note on Twitter Monday about the situation and asked people to pray for Ulis.

Ulis shared his appreciation for the note.

Ulis played two seasons at Kentucky from 2014-2016. He averaged 17.3 points per game as a sophomore and was the SEC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year that season. He also was an All-American.

Ulis was a second-round pick by the Suns in 2016 and played two seasons for them and one briefly with the Bulls. Ulis was expecting to return to his Golden State Warriors G League team in March.
