Kentucky's John Welch says Tyler Ulis brings 'basketball intellect' to Wildcats' staff
Jordan Prather-USA TODAY Sports

Former Kentucky basketball guard Tyler Ulis has proven to be a valuable addition to the Wildcats' staff.

Fellow Kentucky staffer John Welch was asked by the media earlier about what Ulis brings to the table for UK.

"Basketball intellect. He just sees the game," Welch said. "You can see Coach Calipari values his opinion. He's played at the highest level, played at Kentucky... An unbelievable resource for a point guard, for Reed, DJ, Rob."

Ulis joined the staff a season ago as a student assistant. As a guard at Kentucky in 2015, Ulis averaged 17.3 points and 7.0 assists per game while winning the Bob Cousy Award as the nation's premier point guard. Ulis was also named a consensus First Team All-American, SEC Player of the Year, SEC Defensive Player of the Year, SEC Tournament MVP and First Team All-SEC. He joined Anthony Davis as the only players to win both SEC Player of the Year and SEC Defensive Player of the Year in the same season. Calipari called Ulis "the greatest floor general" he's ever coached.

Hopefully Ulis can continue to add value to the staff as a student assistant and potentially in a larger role in the future. Right now he's helping the talents of Rob Dillingham, Reed Sheppard and DJ Wagner blossom.
