Oskar Palmquist returns to Rutgers men’s basketball

In a rarity in college basketball, Oskar Palmquist has returned to Rutgers. As I reported on Saturday with the Austin Williams commitment news, Palmquist is back after transferring to Elon earlier this offseason. He re-entered the transfer portal a few weeks ago.

Per a source, former Rutgers wing Oskar Palmquist has re-entered the transfer portal. He left after last season & transferred to Elon in May. With three open scholarships currently, the option for him to return to Rutgers is a real possibility. Shot 36.4% from three last season.

Following the defections of Cam Spencer and Paul Mulcahy, Rutgers had room for the 6’8″ wing to return.

After seeing limited action most of his career, Palmquist emerged in the second half of last season. He had a breakout game on February 1 against Minnesota. He scored a career high 13 points on 3 of 4 shooting from three along with 2 rebounds and 2 assists.

With starter Mawot Mag lost for the season due to injury the following game, Palmquist became a regular in the rotation coming off the bench. He made 3 of 4 shots from behind the arc at Indiana. Palmquist hit a big three in a 1 point win at Wisconsin. He also made two timely second half threes in the 19 point comeback win at Penn State. In addition, he gave RU 18 quality minutes in the Big Ten Tournament win over Michigan.

Last season, Palmquist made 12 of 33 shots from three-point range for 36.4%. He averaged 2.3 points and 1.1 rebounds in 21 appearances while averaging 9.1 minutes per contest.

In 48 career games for Rutgers, Palmquist averages 1.7 points on 35.6% shooting from three-point range.

Bringing Palmquist makes a lot of sense. With three scholarships open this , he is a sure thing. He is a quality teammate and three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection that provides quality depth. His ability to contribute late in the season after playing so little prior to is a testament to his mental toughness. He also has a specific skill set in shooting threes that is needed.

Rutgers men’s basketball has now filled all 13 scholarships for the 2023-2024 season.
