While the programming concept of MTV has drastically changed over the years, the network's core concept was rooted in its name's true meaning: music television. The network was first launched on August 1, 1981, and would spin music videos in rotation throughout the day. However, the network's Video Music Awards (VMAs) show launched on September 14, 1984.
