Adele's 'Easy On Me' is here, and the music video will rip your heart out

The rest of 2021 belongs to Adele, as of Thursday night.

The 33-year-old powerhouse singer-songwriter dropped her highly anticipated single "Easy On Me" with a stunning accompanying music video:

The black-and-white visual begins with Adele leaving her now-empty house. She takes one last look before picking up her suitcase and putting on her sunglasses. She walks outside, and the wind is gusting as she calls someone to tell them she's about to get on the road. The call's signal is poor, so she hangs up.

The 15-time Grammy winner hops into her truck and pops a cassette with "Easy On Me" written atop it into the player. She glances quickly in the rearview mirror and drives away, past a "SOLD" sign in the yard.

And then come the undeniably, instantly recognizable vocals. Even if it has been since 2015 since Adele's last release, we'd recognize an Adele chorus anywhere: "Go easy on me, baby / I was still a child / Didn't get the chance to / Feel the world around me / I had no time to choose what I chose to do / So go easy on me."

As she belts, a newly married couple speeds by her while sheet music flies out the open windows and down the deserted dirt road. By the second run through the chorus, Adele is seated in a now-colorful living room with that sheet music on the floor around her.

Adele became the first-ever simultaneous cover star of Vogue and British Vogue last week, and with Abby Aguirre for Vogue, she indirectly unpacked what the "Easy On Me" is referencing while describing what she did in order to retain happiness after filing for divorce in 2019:

"Well, my therapist told me that I had to sit with my little seven-year-old self. Because she was left on her own. And I needed to go sit with her and really address how I felt when I was growing up. And issues with my dad. Which I’d been avoiding. Not being sure if someone who is supposed to love you loves you, and doesn’t prioritize you in any capacity when you’re little. You assume it and get used to it. So my relationship with men in general, my entire life, has always been: You’re going to hurt me, so I’ll hurt you first. It’s just toxic and prevents me from actually finding any happiness."

"Easy On Me" is the lead single of 30, Adele's fourth solo studio album due Nov. 19 and her first solo release since 2015's 25 album. View the cover art below.
