Adrien Brody reportedly to play Pat Riley in HBO's 1980s Los Angeles Lakers series

While HBO's series chronicling the 1980s Los Angeles Lakers does not yet have a title, it has reportedly added another star to its roster.

According to Variety's Joe Otterson, Oscar-winning actor Adrien Brody has been selected to portray Pat Riley. The NBA legend was the Lakers head coach from 1981 through 1990 before moving on to the New York Knicks and Miami Heat. Riley, who was inducted to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008, currently serves as the Heat's team president.

HBO ordered the limited series in December 2019, Deadline reported at the time, with Adam McKay as executive producer through his Hyperobject Industries. It is based upon Jeff Pearlman's 2014 book Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s

The cast also reportedly includes John C. Reilly as the late Jerry Buss, Jason Clarke as Jerry West, and more.

Brody won his Oscar in 2003 for his leading role in The Pianist. The 47-year-old had a recurring role in television series Peaky Blinders in 2017, and he can be seen again soon in the Wes Anderson-directed The French Dispatch, Netflix biopic Blonde and Stephen King-created series Chapelwaite
