Alyssa Milano on 'Charmed' costar Shannen Doherty: 'I could take responsibility for a lot of our tension that we had'

Charmed aired for eight seasons from 1998 to 2006, but Shannen Doherty only portrayed Prue Halliwell for three of them.

The other two Halliwell sisters—the "Charmed Ones" who used their witchcraft for good—were played by Alyssa Milano and Holly Marie Combs. Doherty addressed rumors that a soured relationship with Milano was the reason for her departure during an Entertainment Tonight interview all the way back in 2001, and this week, Milano spoke to the same outlet about where she stands with Doherty.

"I would say we are cordial," the 48-year-old actress and activist told ET. "You know, I could take responsibility for a lot of our tension that we had. I think a lot of our struggle came from feeling that I was in competition rather than it being that sisterhood that the show was so much about. And I have some guilt about my part in that."

Doherty, 50, was originally diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 and went into remission by early 2017. The cancer returned as stage 4 in February 2020, and the former 90210 star gave an encouraging update on her condition earlier this month:

Milano shared that she "reached out" to Doherty "when I heard about her diagnosis" and still "will send her DMs every couple of months to just check in."

"I have respect for her," she added. "Great actress, loves her family so much, and I just wish I could've felt strong enough in who I was to recognize that back then."

Milano's book Sorry Not Sorry was published Tuesday (Oct. 26).
