Movie actors used to look down on television. Often TV stars were hoping to make the move to films, and film stars acting on television was viewed as a de facto demotion. That belief no longer permeates the entertainment industry. Movie stars do television all the time now, as it serves as another medium for big names to showcase their skills. Many people who have movie careers will be at the 2019 Emmys, or at least they might be, given that they are nominated. Here are some of the A-listers who will likely be on the red carpet either because they are nominated or their TV show is.
When you’re in Marvel movie, as Cheadle is as War Machine, you know you’re a movie star. The guy is an Avenger! However, he also does a fair amount of TV. After starring in “House of Lies” for several seasons, he just got nominated for an Emmy for his new show, “Black Monday.”
Speaking of guys from Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, Douglas is now a member of that world as well. Of course, before that he was already a star, not to mention an Oscar winner. A guy like Douglas never would have done TV in the day, but now he’s got an Emmy nomination for his Netflix show, “The Kominsky Method.”
Hader is the defending winner of Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his hit HBO show “Barry.” When he’s not playing an actor/hitman, Hader, who quite the film career of his own, is working on movies. A lot of his best-known work has been as a voice actor, as his distinctive voice can be heard in films such as “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs,” “Inside Out” and “Ralph Breaks the Internet.”
Bateman’s career has been a veritable yo-yo. He started as a TV star as a kid then began a movie career. It didn’t pan out the first time around, so he went back to TV, including on the hit show “Arrested Development.” His second go-round as a movie star has gone better, but he’s still doing TV. In addition to finishing off his run on “Arrested Development,” he’s Emmy nominated for the drama “Ozark.”
Amy Adams is a perennial Oscars darling, and she’s quickly moving into the “she’s due to win” stage of her movie career. However, she might get a chance to win an Emmy before she gets her first statue from the Academy Awards. Adams is nominated for her HBO minsieries “Sharp Objects,” and she’s definitely one of the favorites to win.
That being said, it might be hard for Adams to beat Williams, who was transcendent in the minds of many as Gwen Verdon in FX’s “Fosse/Verdon.” This isn’t the first time Williams has gotten raves for portraying a real person. She got plenty of love for her work as Marilyn Monroe on the big screen.
Arquette has two chances to add to her Emmy collection in 2019. She already has one for her work on “Medium,” the kind of show that, admittedly, probably wouldn’t win an Emmy these days. Then, of course, there is her Oscar win for Best Actress from “Boyhood.” That movie took up a fair amount of her time, what with it being shot over 12 years, but it paid off. She’s moved on from that nicely with these two Emmy nominations for her work on "Escape at Dannemora" and "The Act."
Del Toro has had an eclectic but accomplished movie career. He’s won an Oscar, played the Wolfman and had his first role in a Pee-wee Herman movie. One thing he hasn’t really done, though, is appear on TV. In fact, his performance in the limited series “Escape to Dannemora” was his first time as a regular on a show since 1990 and his first acting role on TV full stop since 1995.
Watch a romantic comedy film from the ‘90s, and there’s a good chance you’ll see Grant bumbling and stumbling with his British accent. It’s what made him a star. Also, he was in “Paddington 2,” which apparently is his favorite among films been in. We don’t know how he feels about “A Very English Scandal,” but he did get a nomination for it.
We already mentioned Michelle Williams, who is nominated for “Fosse/Verdon.” Rockwell is the other half of that title, as he played legendary choreographer Bob Fosse. He’s never starred in, say, a huge blockbuster, though he is in “Iron Man 2,” but he’s starred in some quite good movies. If you haven’t seen “Moon,” for example, you should rectify that as soon as possible.
There is a lot of movie star power in “The Kominsky Method.” In addition to the aforementioned Michael Douglas, Arkin is also on the show. That’s right: It’s two Oscar winners acting alongside each other on a Netflix show. It’s not one of the hits from the streaming giant, but you can’t argue with this level of name recognition.
Alan Arkin won his Oscar for “Little Miss Sunshine,” a film that also starred Dano. Then Dano made an even bigger name for himself by being able to go toe-to-toe with Daniel Day-Lewis in “There Will Be Blood.” He also held his own playing the young Brian Wilson in “Love and Mercy.” Dano is yet another movie star nominated for work on “Escape to Dannemora.”
Linney has gone back and forth between movies and TV with ease. She already has four Emmys, after all, and starred in the Showtime program “The Big C.” On top of that, she has three Oscar nominations. Linney also has been in some hit films for which she wasn’t nominated, including “The Truman Show” and “Mystic River.” Linney acts alongside Jason Bateman in “Ozark.”
All hail the Queen! Colman just won an Oscar for playing Queen Anne in the bonkers period piece “The Favourite.” In “Fleabag,” she takes it to the next level by playing a god…mother. Colman has been acting for years, and she certainly was a star in her native Britain, but now she’s a movie star the world over thanks to her Oscar.
Ali is about to become an even bigger movie star, as it has been announced he will be playing Blade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not that he needs the boost. The guy already has two Oscar wins for acting. He also helped revitalize “True Detective,” after a disappointing second season, with his performance in the third season of the serialized HBO show.
OK, so Blanchett is a maybe for the Emmys. She’s not nominated, but she was the star in the biggest, most-prominent episode of IFC’s sly parody show “Documentary Now!” Blanchett carries the spoof of “The Artist is Present,” which is nominated for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Series. The show is also nominated for writing in the same category, and Outstanding Variety Sketch Series as well. Maybe Blanchett will show up in support. If she does, her status as a movie star is undeniable.
A TV movie based on an iconic Shakespeare play? Yeah, you’re going to rope in some British acting royalty for that. Indeed, an adaptation of “King Lear” put together by BBC Two and Amazon Prime has the names you would expect. Future movie star Florence Pugh is in the cast, but the titular king is played by Hopkins, whose resume does not need to be stated at this point.
We’re throwing in one more actor from “King Lear” who might be at the Emmys or at the very least is a movie star. Thompson was in three movies in 2019 alone and has been a huge success as not just an actor but also as a screenwriter. There’s a reason for Thompson to potentially be at the Emmys beyond “King Lear.” She’s also nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series due to her stint hosting “Saturday Night Live.”
We’re about to hit you back-to-back with guys nominated for Guest Actor thanks to “Saturday Night Live.” De Niro is one of the biggest movie stars in the world, even today, so he may not bother going to the Emmys. However, the legendary star of “Raging Bull” and “Meet the Parents” isn’t nominated for hosting “SNL" but for his appearance on the show as Robert Mueller.
Damon was nominated for his hosting duties on “Saturday Night Live.” It’s his first nomination for that gig but his third Emmy nomination. One of his previous nominations was in this category for his guest role on “30 Rock.” Since the days of “Good Will Hunting” over 20 years ago, Damon has been a movie star. You try telling Jason Bourne he doesn’t deserve an Emmy.
Speaking of “Saturday Night Live,” that’s the show that made McKinnon a star. It’s also a show that she’s, somewhat surprisingly, still on. McKinnon is seemingly a lock to be nominated for her “SNL” work every year, but eventually her movie career is going to call her away from the TV staple. She’s been a movie star since 2016 when she appeared in films like “Ghostbusters” and “Office Christmas Party.” The roles are still coming too, as she was in “The Spy Who Dumped Me” in 2018 and “Yesterday” this year.
