Artists with the most wins at the BET Hip Hop Awards

Every era of hip-hop seems to have a handful of artists who run the genre for a certain amount of time, yet a few are able to adjust with the genre’s ever-changing sound while being in the game for decades. Since the BET Hip Hop Awards' first inception in 2006, there have been many artists who have dominated the show in wins across different categories. Let’s take a look back at some of the artists with the most wins at the BET Hip Hop Awards and how they stand out among the rest.

Kendrick Lamar

It's been only seven years since Kendrick Lamar released his major label debut album, "Good Kid, M.A.A.D City," and he's already managed to become one of hip-hop's promising stars. He holds the record of most wins at the BET Hip Hop Awards with 20, including Lyricist of the Year and Album of the Year for "DAMN."

Drake

Some fans may have fell in love with Drake's character on the TV show "Degrassi," while others started to like him for his music after releasing mixtapes like "Comeback Season" and "So Far Gone." Drake has been in the industry for just over a decade, and he's one of the biggest hip-hop acts of this generation. Throughout his career, he's won 16 BET Hip Hop Awards, including Album of the Year for "Nothing Was The Same" and Best Club Banger for "Started From The Bottom."

To some people, it's hard to believe that Jay Z released his debut album, "Reasonable Doubt," in 1996, and now he's one of the few hip-hop billionaires. Not only has he elevated his sound but also his lyricism and storytelling over the years. He's won 16 BET Hip Hop Awards including Hustler of the Year, Lyricist of the Year and MVP of the Year.

Kanye West

When Kanye West first started in the music industry, he was producing for artists such as Jay Z, Alicia Keys, Ludacris and Janet Jackson. Once he decided he wanted to be a rapper, his debut album, "The College Dropout," was born. He's won trophies for Best Hip Hop Style and Producer of the Year and has 16 wins total.

Lil Wayne

Lil Wayne's debut studio album, "Tha Block Is Hot," was released in 1999, and with 20 years in the music industry, he tends to rank high on hip-hop lists. Over his career, he's won 15 BET Hip Hop Awards, including Best Live Performer and the prestigious I Am Hip Hop.

DJ Khaled

DJ Khaled

Some of DJ Khaled's most famous taglines include "We the best!" and "We taking over!," and they have proved true with the 13 wins he's received throughout his career. His famous catchphrases and party anthems have helped him earn trophies for Hustler of the Year and DJ of the Year.

Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj first signed to Lil Wayne's Young Money Entertainment in 2009. Since then she's become one of hip-hop's dominant stars. Some of her hit songs include "Super Bass," "Anaconda" and "Only." She's won eight awards, including Rookie of the Year and Best Hip Hop Style.

T.I. is known as the hustler of the south and one of the artists who helped establish trap music. With 10 studio albums under his belt, some of his hit songs include "Whatever You Like," "Live Your Life" and "About The Money." He's won nine Hip Hop Awards including MVP of the Year and Track of the Year for his hit song, "What You Know."

Cardi B

Some people first knew Cardi B from funny videos she would post on Instagram and Vine, while others came to know her as a cast member on VH1's "Love & Hip Hop: New York." Her career as a rapper skyrocketed after one season on the hit show, and she's been dominating the charts and airwaves ever since. In just two years she's won nine BET Hip Hop Awards, including Single of the Year for "Bodak Yellow" and Sweet 16: Best Featured Verse" for her collaboration with Migos on "MotorSport."

J. Cole doesn't make many award show appearances like he used to, but that doesn't mean he won't get any recognition. He's won five BET Hip Hop Awards including Best Mixtape for "Friday Night Lights" and Impact Track for "Love Yourz."

Video director Hype Williams has created visuals for some of the best artists in the industry. He's the visual eye behind some of the most iconic music videos such as TLC's "No Scrubs," Busta Rhymes and Janet Jackson "What's It Gonna Be" and Aaliyah's "Rock The Boat." He's won seven awards for Video Director of the Year.
