Hugh Jackman commends Meghan Markle & Prince Harry for transparency about mental health

Even Wolverine knows when to ask for help.

Hugh Jackman joined the millions-strong chorus reacting to Oprah's explosive sit-down interview with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on Sunday night. The Oscar-nominated actor specifically commended Meghan Markle for vulnerably sharing that she, at one point, "just didn't want to be alive anymore" because of the cruel and often racist scrutiny she faced after marrying into the royal family in 2018.

"I recommend Oprah's interview with Meghan and Harry, which [his wife] Deb and I and millions around the world watched last night with astonishment," Jackman said in a video posted to Twitter, "because there we were witnessing an incredibly high profile woman and her husband speak so openly, courageously, honestly—with such dignity—about really the hardest time in their life and their cry for help."

Jackman directed followers to Australian non-profit foundation Gotcha4Life, which is dedicated to reducing suicide and promoting mental fitness. The 52-year-old is a board member.

"Last night, I just thought, everyone needs to see this because it is such an incredible example to never worry alone," Jackman continued. "Seek help. And if you're not getting help where you're looking for it, keep looking. Go somewhere else. Because there is always help."

One of several jaw-dropping revelations revealed during the 90-minute interview was Markle's admission that when she realized she was suicidal, she was refused help from "one of the most senior people" within the royal institution.

"I was ashamed to say it at the time and ashamed to have to admit it to Harry," the former actress and mother told Oprah. "But I knew that if I didn't say it, then I would do it. I just didn't want to be alive anymore. That was clear and real and frightening and constant thought."

Markle and Prince Harry, along with their infant son Archie, announced they were going to "step back as 'senior' members of the royal family and work to become financially independent":

Prince Harry detailed to Oprah that the simplest reason why he and his wife left the U.K. was "a lack of support and lack of understanding" from members of his family and the monarchy. Since, the couple have settled down in Southern California and are expecting their second child—a girl!—this summer.
