Over the weekend, Crunchyroll held its big Anime Awards ceremony, celebrating the best anime of 2024. The ceremony was filled with awards, of course, but also packed with celebrities, from musicians like Megan Thee Stallion (yes, really) and LiSA to actors like Iman Vellani, directors, wrestlers, and more. It was a pretty stellar show.
There were a few musical performances too, including an Anime Awards theme song composed by Attack on Titan composers Hiroyuki Sawano and Kohta Yamamoto, and a performance of Idol by Yoasobi, which is a banger song.
Of course, the main event was the awards, and there are some very interesting wins. Demon Slayer’s Swordsmith Village arc picked up a handful of awards, taking home Best Animation, Best Art Direction, and Best Fantasy. One Piece, of course, picked up some awards too, bringing home Best Continuing Series and Best Main Character for Monkey D. Luffy — not that there was much competition, Luffy is the clear frontrunner.
The real star of the show, though, was Jujutsu Kaisen, which absolutely dominated awards wins across the board. It picked up wins for Best Action, Best Cinematography, Best Director, Best Opening Sequence, and quite a few more. It also picked up the big one – Anime of the Year – being named the best anime to be released in 2023. Not surprising, by any means, but it will be interesting to see if it picks up quite as many awards in the future.
