Read Britney Spears's full court testimony from her ongoing battle to end conservatorship

Britney Spears spoke via phone in court Wednesday (June 23) to Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny against the conservatorship she has been under since 2008.

The 39-year-old pop star made it clear she does not just want her father, Jamie Spears, to be removed as her conservator—she wants the conservatorship to be ended altogether.

Jamie has had sole control over her affairs and acted as co-conservator of her estate until 2019, when he stepped down as primary conservator for "personal health reasons," and Jodi Montgomery temporarily took over.

As of November 2020, the court has declined to remove Jamie as the head of his daughter's estate; instead, Bessemer Trust was named co-conservator (h/t The New York Times).

Wednesday, Spears spoke vehemently about the "abuse" she alleges to have suffered from her father, family, doctors and therapists, including her "so-called team" refusing to let her remove her IUD and start a family with her boyfriend, Sam Asghari.

"I would honestly like to sue my family, to be totally honest with you," the Grammy winner asserted at one point. "I also would like to be able to share my story with the world, and what they did to me, instead of it being a hush-hush secret to benefit all of them. I want to be able to be heard on what they did to me by making me keep this in for so long, it is not good for my heart. I’ve been so angry and I cry every day. It concerns me, I’m told I’m not allowed to expose the people who did this to me."

Spears admitted that she has been lying in her public posts to her fans stating that she's OK, especially in response to February's The New York Times Presents: Framing Britney Spears documentary brought her case and the #FreeBritney movement into the mainstream's consciousness.

"It’s a lie," she revealed. "I thought I just maybe if I said that enough maybe I might become happy, because I’ve been in denial. I’ve been in shock. I am traumatized. You know, fake it till you make it. But now I’m telling you the truth, OK? I'm not happy. I can't sleep. I'm so angry, it's insane. And I'm depressed. I cry every day."

Spears spoke mostly uninterrupted—the judge had to interject a few times to tell her to please slow down so her concerns could be properly transcribed, speaking to how desperate, passionate and worked up she is after holding this all in for so long—for 24 minutes.

It marked the first time Spears has spoken in court in two years.
