Fans Mock Masvidal’s Possible Return For Gaethje – ‘Worry About Fighting Obesity First’
Rich Storry-USA TODAY Sports

Jorge Masvidal could come out of retirement to fight ‘BMF’ champion Justin Gaethje.

Gamebread is the former BMF champion, a belt he vacated before fighting Gilbert Burns. Masvidal retired after losing to Burns at UFC 287 in April 2023 via a unanimous decision. He left the sport on a poor run of form, losing his last four UFC fights. But he did leave some memorable memories, securing the fastest knockout in UFC history against Ben Askren at UFC 239 in 2019, which took just five seconds.

He was also the inaugural BMF Champion, a belt he acquired after stopping Nate Diaz at UFC 244 in 2019. Since then, the belt switched hands into Gaethje’s possession. The UFC fighter knocked out Dustin Poirier in the second round with a kick at UFC 291 last year to claim the vacant belt. Gaethje defends the belt at UFC 300 against Max Holloway. While Masvidal was linked with a boxing fight against Nate Diaz, nothing has materialized.

“Nathan Diaz x Jorge Masvidal in a boxing match is in fact in the works for later this year, sources say. I asked Diaz’s rep Zach Rosenfield this evening about it, and he said “I can’t confirm that. As I said multiple times recently, neither man was slated or in talks for 300. This was always the targeted bout,” Helwani said

That has left Gambread to consider a UFC comeback to win his belt if Gaethje beats Holloway.

Masvidal’s Return

“When I won the belt, Dana said it would be one of one. The belt would be done, there would be no defending of it. So there was no talk about it, at least for me. But I think now, the temperature on that theme has changed you know? Now it’s a little different, they’re doing things a little different.

“Justin’s very good, the dude he beat to get that belt is a stud, a f*cking killer in Dustin Poirier. But, I just feel like if you put BMF against BMF, you put me against [Justin] Gaethje in there, I will break his eye orbital and I will f*cking chop him up, man. So hopefully that can happen at some point,” Masvidal said

Will It Happen?

Despite this, Gaethje does not expect the fight to happen anytime soon. The BMF Champion faces Holloway, who is a formidable opponent. Holloway has won his last two fights against Arnold Allen and Chan Sung Jung, respectively.

That was an impressive return to form following the manner of his loss to former UFC Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski. Despite coming out second best, he managed to last the distance with a prime Volkanovski. Although Masvidal offers Gaethje a lucrative fight, he does not see Gambred making a return.

“Sounds fun. But I have one goal, it’s the undisputed championship. I have plenty of time after that to fight those fights. I don’t think [Masvidal is] ever coming back. He looks like he weighs 240 pounds. I fight at 155 pounds, I’m sure he’d want to fight at 170,” Gaethje stated
