Steelers’ Troy Fautanu Didn't Get Direct Details From Mike Tomlin On His Position
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a decisive move in the 2024 NFL Draft by selecting offensive tackle Troy Fautanu from Washington in the first round. Their choice was driven by Fautanu's high ranking on their draft board, and his availability at the 20th pick made it an obvious decision for the organization.

This selection has sparked excitement among fans, signaling the Steelers' commitment to fortifying their offensive line, an area they've been actively seeking to enhance over the past few seasons.

Questions arose regarding Fautanu's specific role with the Steelers, given his versatility across multiple positions on the line, including the potential to play center if needed. However, Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin swiftly dispelled any uncertainty, affirming Fautanu's designation as a tackle immediately after his draft selection.

Fautanu himself addressed inquiries during an interview with 93.7 The Fan, shedding further light on his position within the Steelers' lineup.

“You know for me, my thought process is, I just want to be able to contribute in whatever role that is given to me by the coaches. If Mike Tomlin tells me I am playing tackle, then I will be playing tackle to the fullness of my capabilities. For me, I just want to contribute.”

When asked by the reporter for clarification on whether Coach Tomlin had specified whether he would be playing left tackle or right tackle, Fautanu candidly admitted his uncertainty.

“No, he did not. I am just ready for whatever they throw at me whenever I get down there. I am just excited for the opportunity for sure.”

In the lead-up to the draft, many experts projected Fautanu to be off the board before the Steelers' pick. However, he slipped slightly, prompting speculation about potential medical issues deterring other teams. Despite this, the Steelers conducted thorough evaluations and remain confident in Fautanu's health, dismissing any concerns surrounding his medical history.

The importance of a strong offensive line in football cannot be overstated. History has shown that the most successful teams often boast a dominant front line. Without it, a team's offense can struggle to perform at its peak.

Offensive linemen are not just protectors, but also weapons in their own right. Steelers fans appreciate the organization's commitment to investing in a young, formidable offensive line with immense potential, using their early draft picks to fortify this crucial aspect of the team.

Steelers Likely To Draft A Center Or Wide Receiver In Round 2

The Steelers have a few remaining needs, with two of them being particularly urgent. One glaring gap is at the center position, where they require a rookie capable of stepping in and starting immediately. With the 51st pick in the second round, they have an opportunity to address this need. However, there's a chance that both standout prospects may be off the board by then. The Steelers could opt to trade up or stay put, but if they do select a center in the second round, Zach Frazier and Jackson Powers-Johnson are logical choices, provided they're still available.

Another area in need of improvement is the wide receiver position. While some speculated about the possibility of trading for a star receiver, such a move seems increasingly unlikely. Additionally, the Steelers are also in need of bolstering their cornerback position. These three positions top the Steelers' draft wish list as they look to strengthen their roster.

The draft continues on Friday and Steeler Nation will be locked into what the Steelers' next choices will be. These decisions will play a massive role in shaping the outlook on the 2024 season.
