The 10th hole at Riviera Country Club is the best drivable par 4

The chaotic 10th hole at Riviera Country Club is the best drivable par 4 in golf

Every golf course on earth should feature a drivable par 4. There's nothing quite like the risk-reward element of a short hole that can concede eagles and double bogeys at a similar rate.

When you think about the best drivable par 4s on the PGA Tour, the 17th at TPC Scottsdale, the 13th at Austin Country Club and the 15th at TPC River Highlands are a few that come to mind.

But none of them can hold a candle to the 10th hole at Riviera Country Club, the host of The Genesis Invitational.

The 10th at Riviera is a masterfully designed golf hole that measures only 315 yards. It features a slender, angled green that slopes treacherously from front to back. Three deep bunkers guard the green from the front right to the back, and finding the sand sets up the most difficult green-side bunker shot on Tour.

If players decide to go for the green off the tee, missing right is an absolute no-no. A right miss sets up a near-impossible flop shot over the sand and onto a tiny green that funnels away from you. Good luck keeping your chip on the putting surface from there.

Keep your drive to the left of the green, and you'll set up a great angle to every possible pin location. Go too far over the green, though, and you're in deep trouble.

Not many players today decide to lay up on the 10th, especially if the greens are firm. There's a large fairway bunker down the left side, and even if you hit the fairway, you're faced with a demanding wedge shot to a sliver of a green.

Miss the green with your approach shot, and you'll be happy to get out of there with a bogey.

There's no wonder the 10th at Riviera is the second-hardest par 4 on the PGA Tour that measures under 350 yards.

“I think it’s an amazing hole,” Tony Finau told No Laying Up in 2023. “Everyone has a chance to make birdie, and everyone has a chance to make double. It’s a little bit firmer than it was in the past, and it has a bit more slope. But you know what you have to do. You have to keep it left of the green. I think it’s great.”

The 10th at Riviera is so unique because of how exigent it is without any water hazards or out-of-bounds areas. The hole is right in front of you, yet the best players in the world can make double and triple bogeys without incurring a penalty.

Keep an eye on the 10th hole at The Genesis Invitational this year and enjoy the chaos it always brings.
