Cubs Make Trade, Roster Move Ahead of Wednesday's Matchup
Darren Yamashita-USA TODAY Sports

With the third game against the Washington Nationals on the docket, the Cubs made a trade and a roster move to set their roster.

The Chicago Cubs are looking for a bounce-back win on Wednesday against the Washington Nationals. Prior to game action, the team made a pair of transactions. The first, a trade involving Luis Torrens. The second, a call-up that is a result of Yan Gomes' injury status.

The Cubs have traded catcher Luis Torrens to the Baltimore Orioles for cash considerations. Torrens was DFA'd when Cody Bellinger was activated from the paternity leave list on Friday. Now, the Cubs get something for Torrens rather than him either being claimed or venturing to Triple-A Iowa.

Although the trade was not headlining news, the Cubs have announced that Yan Gomes is on the 7-day concussion IL. The move is retroactive to 5/2 and allows the Cubs to add another arm.

Javier Assad has been and up and down a few times already between Triple-A Iowa and the majors. Assad owns a 9.82 ERA over 7.1 innings of work in three appearances (one start) in the majors. Assad has eight strikeouts and four walks in his time in Chicago as well. At the Triple-A level, Assad owns a much prettier 3.38 ERA in three starts. He has pitched 10.2 innings over that workload and owns 10 strikeouts compared to four walks.

The Cubs and Nationals do battle at 6:05 p.m. CDT on Wednesday. Wednesday's game is the third of four games between the two teams, with Thursday's contest being a 12:05 p.m. CDT start on getaway day.
