Cubs Sign Jorge Alfaro to Minor-League Deal to Bolster Catching Depth, Per Report
Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Cubs made a smart, though not headline-grabbing, move to bolster their catching depth by signing veteran catcher Jorge Alfaro to a minor-league deal, according to  Robert Murray of Fansided. The deal also includes an invitation to Spring Training.

Signing Alfaro presents a no-risk, high-reward situation for the Cubs, giving them a seasoned presence in Triple-A Iowa.

Alfaro is no stranger to the pressures of the big leagues, having spent parts of eight seasons at MLB level. Despite a slump in his offensive performance since 2020, highlighted by a .146 batting average in 2023, Alfaro once showcased significant potential with the Miami Marlins in 2019 when he hit .262 with 18 home runs. Defensively, he has been solid, despite some past issues with passed balls.

With Yan Gomes, who saw his 2024 team option picked up, and Miguel Amaya anticipated to begin the season as the Cubs' primary catchers, Alfaro's role is clear. He will serve as insurance, a competent and ready option should injuries or other circumstances deplete the Cubs' catching corps.

Alfaro's presence doesn't overshadow any development routes for other minor leaguers in the Cubs' system. At 30 years old, he offers a balance of maturity and readiness that could be essential throughout a grueling 162-game MLB season. Alfaro’s contract reportedly includes an opt-out, which could see him leave if the Cubs don't add him to the big-league roster by the end of May, a standard clause for such agreements.

While the signing may not generate the excitement of a marquee acquisition, Alfaro's addition to the Cubs serves as an important part of roster construction for depth purposes.
