Ex-Red Sox Slugger Reportedly Signs With Marlins After Lackluster Stint In Boston

A recent member of the Boston Red Sox has found a new home a couple of weeks after leaving the organization.

"Some news: The (Miami) Marlins have signed catcher Jorge Alfaro to a minor league deal. He is expected to report to Triple-A Jacksonville this week," Miami Herald's Jordan McPherson tweeted Tuesday.

Alfaro elected free agency over being sent back down to Triple-A Worcester following the Red Sox's decision to designate him for assignment on Aug. 1.

It has been a very odd season for the 30-year-old backstop. Alfaro started his season with the WooSox incredibly strong after gaining some fanfare during spring training.

He hit .320 with 21 extra-base hits including six home runs, 30 RBIs and a .886 OPS in 43 games for the WooSox but had no path to the big leagues with Connor Wong and Reese McGuire handling the catching duties for Boston. With that in mind, he elected to opt out of his contract with the Red Sox and would eventually sign with the Colorado Rockies.

The Rockies gave him a cup of coffee in the big leagues before designating him for assignment, leading him back to the Red Sox organization for the second time this season -- to replace the recently injured McGuire on July 6.

Less than a month later, McGuire returned to the active roster and Alfaro was once again sent packing.

In what has been a very chaotic year for Alfaro, he's hoping to find some stability with the Marlins, a team he played for from 2019-2021. Alfaro hit .252 with 58 extra-base hits including 25 home runs, 103 RBIs and a .684 OPS (82 OPS+) in 253 games with the Marlins years ago.

Miami likely will be hoping for similar production out of the veteran catcher.
