Darling underwent surgery to remove a mass from his chest in April, which led to the cancer diagnosis.
The 58-year-old played in the Majors from 1983 through 1995, winning a World Series with the Mets in 1986. He has been a Mets analyst since 2006 and has also worked nationally for both TBS and MLB Network, primarily during the postseason.
