Charles Oliveira is one of the best lightweight fighters in the UFC. However, before his storied lightweight run, he was a hit-and-miss fighter at featherweight, suffering losses to Cub Swanson , Max Holloway, Frankie Edgar , and others. Swanson recently made an interesting revelation about his victory over Oliveira.
Swanson was a recent guest on the JAXXON Podcast. On the podcast, Swanson admitted he fought Oliveira when the Brazilian was a shell of his current self. Nonetheless, he made an interesting part of his training camp and mentality before he fought Oliveira.
It's crazy. I didn't even train any Jiu-Jitsu for that fight because I had pulled my groin pretty bad, and I couldn't run. I was like, 'I'm just going to knock him [Charles Oliveira] out. What else are you going to do?' You know, they gave me like six weeks' notice. I was pretty heavy. I couldn't run. I was like, 'I'm going to knock him out.' Cub Swanson via JAXXON podcast
Swanson knocked out Oliveira 2 minutes 40 seconds into the fight. He landed a right hand on the top of Oliveira, who had a delayed reaction to the impact. Swanson won the Knockout of the Night bonus for the fight. Interestingly, Swanson defeated Dustin Poirier after he fought Oliveira.
Oliveira has very few haters among the fans and fighters. He has always shown respect for his opponents before and after the fight. However, Cub Swanson had some animosity towards the Brazilian before they fought.
Cub Swanson reveals why he didn’t like Charles Oliveira
Cub Swanson fought Charles Oliveira in the first fight of the main card of UFC 152, headlined by Jon Jones and Vitor Belfort . Demetrious Johnson fought in the co-main event of the PPV, defending the title against Joseph Benavidez .
Even though everybody liked Oliveira, it was not the case with Cub Swanson before he fought the Brazilian. Swanson is okay with Oliveira now but had animosity towards the Brazilian before they shared the octagon. Swanson revealed why he didn’t like Oliveira on the JAXXON podcast.
We had fought on a couple of the same cards...he would put on his headphones on like the bus...And Charles would have his headphones on, and he would be singing Brazilian, um, like religious music...and he's singing loud...And that bothered me so much...And then when we got to the arena the next day, there were like six sets of chairs around a big mat at the arena, and the first thing he did is he took his, he had this huge oversized banner, and he whipped it out and he put it on the mat...I started getting annoyed...that bothered me. Nonetheless, Swanson empathized with Oliveira after he fought him. Swanson revealed Oliveira cried on his shoulder after he fought. Swanson also stated Oliveira doesn’t like him as much now as he is a big star. However, he also said it might be due to the language barrier as the Brazilian lightweight doesn’t speak English.
