NBA Legend Magic Johnson Joins Taylor Swift as New 2024 Billionaires
Darren Yamashita-USA TODAY Sports

There’s no doubt Magic Johnson changed the landscape of the NBA when he first entered the league in 1979. After several decades, the Los Angeles Lakers legend reached a new milestone by joining Taylor Swift as 2024’s new billionaires.

Before Johnson was drafted by the Lakers, the franchise was somehow stuck in limbo. Even with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the franchise player, it seemed that the Purple and Gold didn’t have what it takes to win a ring, especially against the best team at that time, the Boston Celtics.

All that changed when Johnson joined the team and a new era in Lakers basketball was started – the Showtime era. Since then, the All-Star point guard led LA to five championships while winning three MVPs, three Finals MVPs, and 12 All-Star Game appearances over the course of his career.

Unfortunately, Johnson’s career was cut short due to his announcement of being positive for HIV. Although the Lakers star would eventually be free of the virus and return to the NBA in the early 90s, he was way past his prime by then.

After retiring from the league, Johnson started several ventures, including a record label and production company. He also worked as a motivational speaker and an NBA commentator during the 2000s. Now, the NBA legend is running a conglomerate composed of various subsidiaries in different fields.

NBA Legend Magic Johnson Joins Taylor Swift as New Billionaires This 2024

Decades after his retirement from the NBA, Johnson has established himself as one of the new billionaires this year, along with musician Taylor Swift. According to an article by Segun Olakoyenikan for Forbes:

“The most famous newcomer is, of course, Taylor Swift, whose record-breaking, five-continent Eras Tour is the first to surpass $1 billion in revenue. The 34-year-old pop star amassed an estimated $1.1 billion fortune, based on earnings from the blockbuster tour, the value of her music catalog and her real estate portfolio. Swift is the first musician to hit ten-figure status solely based on her songs and performances.

NBA legend and businessman Earvin “Magic” Johnson is new this year, too, with an estimated net worth of $1.2 billion, thanks to investments in professional sports teams, movie theaters, Starbucks franchises, real estate and healthcare,” Olakoyenikan wrote.

It’s no surprising for Swift to reach this status, given how popular she has become during the past few years. Johnson, on the other hand, has worked hard to accomplish this feat, making him one of the new African-American athletes to do so.

With 2024 about to hit its second half later this year, there’s more Johnson can still do to go up the ladder. Without a doubt, his accomplishment is a shining light for NBA stars interested in following his path.
