Report: Victor Wembanyama’s former team has gone bankrupt

Victor Wembanyama’s former basketball team has gone bankrupt, according to a report.

Prior to joining the NBA, Wembanyama played in France for Metropolitans 92, which is based in Levallois-Perret and plays in France’s top league: LNB Pro A.

French media outlet Le Parisien published a report on Tuesday saying that Metropolitans 92 informed French authorities that it can no longer participate in any competitions due to its financial situation.

Metropolitans 92 has been in operation since 2007, though it only changed its name to the current one in 2019.

The team won the French Cup in 2013. It took a hit to its roster when both Wembanyama and Bilal Coulibaly were taken in the NBA Draft in 2023.

In addition to Wembanyama and Coulibaly, former longtime NBA player Boris Diaw also played for Metropolitans 92 (though the team operated under a different name at the time).

Not only has Metropolitans 92 gone bankrupt, but so has the G League Ignite team. Those teams met in Las Vegas in October 2022, which was one of the first times many fans in the United States got a chance to see Wembanyama.

The Ignite had Scoot Henderson at the time; he eventually became the No. 3 overall pick in the 2023 draft. Now both teams are no longer in operation a year-and-a-half later.
