Bobby Slowik Comes Up Short For Assistant Coach of the Year at NFL Honors Awards
Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz won the AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year Award at the NFL Honors show on Thursday night, beating out Houston Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik.

Other finalists for the award were Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken, Detriot Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, and Ravens defensive coordinator Mike McDonald.

While he came up short for the honor, the nomination came as no surprise as Slowik, who was in the running for several NFL head coaching positions earlier this offseason based on his success with rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud and turning around the Texans' offense.

Fortunately for Houston, Slowik did not land any of those positions and instead signed a new deal to remain with the Texans that came with a significant pay bump.

In his first season at the position, Slowik helped lead the Texans to their first playoff appearance and win since 2019, stomping on the Cleveland Browns 45-14 in the Wild Card round.

Guided by Slowik, Stroud put together one of the most impressive rookie seasons in NFL history, throwing for throwing for 4,108 yards and 23 touchdowns with just five interceptions.

And unsurprisingly, no one is more excited than Stroud to have Slowik back for another season.

“Yeah, I’m excited. It’s another year with a good coach,” Stroud said after Slowik signed his new deal. “We’ve got a lot of good chemistry. It’s a real good thing.”

Slowik's coaching magic touch also extended to receiver Nico Collins and rookie Tank Dell, both of whom emerged as up-and-coming stars going forward for the franchise.

Now heading into year two at the helm of the offense, Slowik will look to have an even bigger impact on the team's success, and perhaps earn a shot at next year's Assistant Coach of the Year Award.
