Commanders CB Danny Johnson Has 'Weight Lifted' After Signing New Contract

Danny Johnson is staying home after the Washington Commanders inked him to a two-year deal worth up to $7 million.

Johnson, an undrafted pick in 2018, is entering his sixth season with Washington, and he's had to compete every year to stick with the squad.

“Coming from a school like Southern University, which is HBCU, you always have your back against the wall and just be willing to fight," Johnson told former Washington cornerback Fred Smoot. I just take advantage of every opportunity I had.”

Johnson also told Smoot that he is relieved to have his deal signed and is ready to get back to work to make his sixth season the best one yet.

“It’s exciting to just have the weight lifted off your shoulder,” Johnson said. "I’m excited to be back, and I’m ready to get back to work.”

This past season, Johnson played in 11 games for the Commanders, drawing four starts and recording a career-high 29 tackles. Johnson played 44 percent of snaps on defense this season, proving himself to be a key role player for Washington's secondary alongside Kendall Fuller and Benjamin St-Juste.

The team also claimed former Minnesota Vikings cornerback Cameron Dantzler Sr. off waivers earlier this week and could look to add another to the position in the 2023 NFL Draft.
