Jake Matthews reaches Falcons franchise milestone
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

This Falcons season has been marred by inconsistencies. Whether it’s the offense, defense or special teams, Atlanta’s fickle tendencies have defined the 2023 campaign.

Arthur Smith’s play calling has been questionable at times. The line has also been up and down, while the quarterback play could only be accurately described as inconsistent and that might be a compliment.

At least Falcons fans could hang their hats on the defense, right? Well, Ryan Nielsen’s unit has taken a step back in recent weeks after Grady Jarrett went down with a season-ending injury.

Even the third phase of the game has been bad for the Falcons. Special teams were a strength last year, but it’s been a complete 180 in that department this season.

However, what has been consistent is Jake Matthews, who tied the Falcons franchise record with his 154th consecutive start, which began in 2014.

Matthews has been an iron man for the Falcons since he was drafted. He almost missed a game last year due to the birth of his child, but he ended up making it by the skin of his teeth. He typically doesn’t get the praise he deserves. To be an above average tackle for nearly a decade without missing a game is unheard of in the NFL.

The Falcons have a lot of things to figure out at quarterback, but whoever ends up under center will not have to worry about their blindside because Jake Matthews will be there anchoring the left side.
