Jared Goff addresses contract extension talks with Lions

Quarterback Jared Goff admitted during a news conference that he hasn't yet entered contract extension negotiations with the Detroit Lions. 

"I mean, of course you'd be open," Goff told reporters, as shared by Justin Rogers of The Detroit News. "It hasn't been brought to my attention, but yeah, of course open to anything. Not up to me. I'm a player, I don't have to make those decisions. And if I did, I would have made that decision a long time ago: Give me and all my friends all the money in the world. But I just get to play, and if that comes about, that'd be great. But we'll see." 

Goff is signed through the 2024 campaign and is coming off the better of his two years with the Lions. According to ESPN stats, the 28-year-old ended this past season ranked fifth among qualified players with a 61.1 adjusted QBR, tied for fifth with 29 touchdown passes and sixth with 4,438 yards through the air. He tossed just seven interceptions across his 17 games. 

The Lions have seemingly ruled out a move for Baltimore Ravens star Lamar Jackson while he's on the non-exclusive franchise tag, but Detroit head coach Dan Campbell indicated in late March the club could draft a young signal-caller with either pick No. 6 or selection No. 18. 

"We’ve had good talks, more toward the end of last season or right after the end of last season," Goff said about conversations he's had with general manager Brad Holmes. "Everything has been clear and open. I’ve got all the trust in the world in Brad and Dan and everything they do and really excited to see what we do and where we go."

If Goff guides the Lions to a playoff berth and posts similar numbers to the ones he produced in 2022, Detroit likely would have to lock him down via an extension that would benefit both parties before he celebrates his 30th birthday in October 2024.
