Jets' Joe Douglas, Aaron Rodgers open up about Zach Wilson

New York Jets general manager Joe Douglas held his end-of-season news conference on Monday and confirmed he will do what's "right for the team" regarding the future of quarterback Zach Wilson.

"Had a good conversation with Zach," Douglas remarked, per Phillip Martinez of SNY. "Going to get together after these player exit interviews and get with the staff and put our gameplan together for the offseason."

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network repeated a previous report when he said over the weekend the Jets intend to shop Wilson to other clubs this offseason. Douglas neither confirmed nor denied such claims on Monday.

"If the phone rings, I’m going to pick it up," Douglas explained. "I don’t have a crystal ball into what exactly is going to happen here in the future."

The Jets haven't hidden they wanted Wilson, the second overall pick from the 2021 NFL Draft, to experience a bit of a reset sitting behind future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers throughout this season after head coach Robert Saleh benched the 24-year-old on multiple occasions during the 2022 campaign. Rodgers then went down with a torn Achilles early into the regular-season opener, and Wilson struggled before he was pulled from the Week 11 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Wilson ultimately ended the season in the concussion protocol.

"I love Zach and I want what’s best for him," Rodgers said about Wilson while speaking with reporters on Monday. "If he wants to be here, and if that’s what’s best for him, I’d love to have that relationship for another year. But I want what’s best for him and where he wants to be. And sometimes a change of scenery, as I know, can be a breath of fresh air. And it’s good to be able to have a new start sometimes."

Per ESPN stats, Wilson ended the regular season ranked last in the NFL with a 30.4 adjusted QBR for the season. He accumulated a 12-21 record across his first three pro campaigns.
