MVP for the Seahawks at the midseason mark
Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

A lot has gone well for the Seattle Seahawks in 2023, and it is hard to say anything has been better than the development of rookie defender Devon Witherspoon.

Witherspoon may have taken a little longer than hoped to start making an impact due to an injury, but the results since then have been nothing short of spectacular.

The results have been so good that Witherspoon should start getting some attention as the team's MVP at this point in the season.

During the seven games that he has played, Witherspoon has accounted for an interception for a touchdown, nine passes defended, two sacks, 39 tackles, two tackles for loss, and three quarterback hits.

That is a lot for a rookie that also plays the hardest position on that side of the field.

Witherspoon has done it all and has found ways to impact the defense in every game. From timely plays on the ball to big hits in the backfield that look like they were delivered by a safety rather than a corner, it is hard to think of a more versatile guy on a defense that needed it.

Seattle's defense used to define the franchise. Over the past few years, that definition shifted from one of defense to one of offense, and the defensive performances were so bad that the team wasn't able to overcome this deficiency when it mattered.

Seattle's most recent draft was supposed to start addressing that fact. No one expected these picks to transform the defense as fast as they did, Witherspoon most of all.

It isn't being a rookie corner on a bad defense. That is usually a recipe for disaster, especially on the mental side. That couldn't be further from what actually happened for Witherspoon.

Instead of taking time to learn the speed of the game, Seattle's star rookie immediately found his step and elevated the rest of the defense with him, a move that gave Seattle one of the better defenses in the league.

Devon Witherspoon is playing at a level that makes this look like an all-time use of draft capital to address a roster. It is hard to think of a guy that has been more valuable to this roster thus far.
