Seattle Seahawks bring back key defensive player to help their secondary as NFL free agency begins
Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

The Seahawks have not been the most active in the first wave of NFL free agency. That's typically how things go with general manager John Schneider. He'll make a few key moves to bring some players back on deals beneficial to the team, then he builds out from there. The most recent signing seems to be a part of that typical first wave as the Seahawks will be bringing back an important depth piece of their secondary.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Seahawks will be re-signing cornerback Artie Burns to a one-year deal. The contract can become official as soon as this afternoon when NFL free agency begins.

Burns played a limited role last year as he was dinged up at times, but when he was on the field he was a highly graded player via multiple charting data sources (PFF & Sports Info Solutions). Bringing back key secondary depth in Burns is a smart (and likely cheap) move that should give the Seahawks great options in various nickel and dime packages for the 2024 season.

Burns played almost all of his snaps in the slot last year out of necessity, but he's long enough to play and win at outside cornerback too (as he did for much of his time in Pittsburgh). Expect him to plug into the secondary in a variety of ways this coming season with the Seahawks.
