Steelers' Najee Harris Drawing Big Concerns From Insider: 'Is He Going To Be Moaning And Complaining Behind The Scenes?'
Mitch Stringer-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers caused a stir among their fanbase on Thursday by opting not to exercise star running back Najee Harris’ fifth-year option. This decision would have secured Harris a guaranteed $6.7 million for the 2025 season, but now, Harris will hit free agency after the 2024 season.

Steelers reporter Mark Kaboly joined 93.7 The Fan on Friday to discuss the decline of Harris’ fifth-year option. During the conversation, the notion arose that perhaps the decision was made to spur Harris on. Kaboly was queried about whether motivation played a role in the choice to decline the option.

"Potentially, I mean he’s a very unique character. He’s hard to get a read on. Sometimes he’s cranky and sometimes he’s talkative. My biggest concern right now is which one are you going to get during the regular season here… is he going to be sitting and moaning and complaining behind the scenes… I’m not quite sure right now because he’s a very intriguing individual that can go either way at this point.”

Kaboly shared some intriguing observations about Harris. He noted the running back's tendency to alternate between cheerful smiles and moments of apparent irritation, painting Harris as an enigmatic figure who is difficult to decipher.

Furthermore, it's worth noting that Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin has consistently praised Harris in the past. However, Kaboly suggested that Tomlin's involvement in the decision to decline Harris' option was significant. When asked whether he's observed any strain in the relationship between Tomlin and Harris, given Harris' three seasons with the team, Kaboly weighed in on the matter.

“He still talks glowingly of him. You see the interactions and the behind-the-scenes stuff. I don’t know if it has changed to that point at least publicly or at least where we can see it here. I think it’s a big deal for Najee to get that C ripped off him last year. He wants to be a leader and at least tries to be a leader.”

Kaboly emphasized that the Steelers' decision to decline Harris' option boils down to financial considerations. They deemed Harris' guaranteed $6.7 million for the 2025 season as too steep a price tag at this juncture. Despite Tomlin's continued support for Harris, the bottom line remains paramount, highlighting the business aspect of the NFL, irrespective of the rapport between Tomlin and his players.

Furthermore, Kaboly pointed out that Tomlin's decision to strip Harris of the captaincy for the 2023 season, with Kenny Pickett taking over, likely strained their relationship. This move, according to Kaboly, may have soured Harris' perception of Tomlin.

Steelers’ Najee Harris Hungry For A Career Year In 2024

While Harris’ option has been declined, it doesn’t signal the Steelers' readiness to part ways with the running back who has consistently surpassed 1,000 rushing yards in each of his three NFL seasons. Harris has undeniably been a productive asset, but with Jaylen Warren's emergence, his role has slightly diminished. Despite still being the starter and receiving the majority of reps, Warren is also gaining confidence in that position.

The Steelers have expressed their intention to assess Harris' performance under Arthur Smith's offensive scheme before committing significant funds to him. Kaboly sees two potential outcomes: either Harris succumbs to frustration and struggles in 2024, or—as most anticipate—he becomes motivated to earn a larger contract and delivers a career-best performance in an offense tailored to his strengths. With an upgraded offensive line and improvements across the board, Harris is poised for a standout 2024 season.
