Three takeaways from the 49ers' dominant victory over Seahawks

On Thanksgiving night, the San Francisco 49ers (8-3) topped the Seattle Seahawks (6-5), 31-13, led by a solid defensive effort and a massive night from running back Christian McCaffrey. Here are three takeaways from the 49ers' impressive road win.

49ers D dominated against Seahawks: The 49ers' defense had the Seahawks offense for Thanksgiving dinner, limiting their offense to only six points on the night. Seattle managed a measly average of 4.1 yards per play, posting just 220 yards of total offense – their second-lowest output of the season.

With the 49ers holding a 24-3 lead at halftime, the team's offense allowed the Seahawks back in the game when QB Brock Purdy threw a pick-six to linebacker Jordyn Brooks. Down the stretch, though, the 49ers defense responded time and time again. After Seattle cut the San Francisco lead to 24-13 midway through the final quarter, the 49ers defense stopped the Seahawks on their final possession, stuffing them on third- and fourth-and-1 to preserve the victory.

Christian McCaffrey carried 49ers offense: On a night when things weren't consistently clicking with Purdy and the 49ers offense, McCaffrey showed he could lead the charge when called upon. McCaffrey gave the Seahawks defense fits, rushing for 114 yards (19 carries) and two touchdowns while adding five catches for 25 yards through the air in the win.

After rushing for two scores on Thursday, McCaffrey tied three-time Super Bowl Champion Roger Craig (1985) for the most touchdowns in a single season by a 49ers running back. McCaffrey trails only Jerry Rice for the 49ers franchise record for touchdowns in a season. Rice occupies the first and second spots, scoring 17 touchdowns twice (1989 and 1995) and the record of 23 in 1987.

Seahawks on the wrong end of measuring stick game: The Seahawks invested heavily in their defense during the 2023 NFL Draft and locked up QB Geno Smith in the offseason in an effort to catch up to the 49ers in the NFC West. However, their first meeting with their divisional foe didn't go too well.

The Seahawks looked outclassed on both sides of the ball. Defensively, they could not slow down the 49ers' primary weapons in McCaffrey and wideout Deebo Samuel, who finished with seven catches for 79 yards and a rushing touchdown. Offensively, Smith was running for his life, sacked six times while throwing for only 180 yards with no touchdowns and an interception. Meanwhile, Seahawks rookie running back Zach Charbonnet never got going playing in place of the injured Kenneth Walker, averaging only 3.4 yards per carry (47 yards) off 14 touches.

Seattle won't have to wait long to prove the Thanksgiving massacre was a fluke. The Seahawks will travel to play the 49ers in their second of two divisional matchups in just two weeks.
