What Giants' Daniel Jones worked on after signing contract

NFL reporter Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post noted Monday that New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is "more comfortable than expected returning to the same offensive system" and also apparently studied Kansas City Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes this offseason. 

"The biggest jump that Jones took was in his Mahomesian improvisations," Dunleavy explained. "With less time spent drilling fundamentals and thinking about decision-making, Jones unveiled some new arm angles for releasing the ball around pressure and looked smooth making the off-platform throws that are all the rage in the NFL nowadays." 

Jones helped the Giants qualify for the playoffs in his first season playing under head coach Brian Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka. Per StatMuse, the 26-year-old led the NFL for the 2022 regular season with an interception percentage of 1.1%, and ESPN stats show he was tied for sixth among qualified players with a 60.8 adjusted QBR. 

Ahead of the March deadline for teams to use their franchise tags, Jones and the Giants agreed to a four-year contract reportedly worth up to $160M. 

Giants defensive coordinator Don "Wink" Martindale said earlier this month he felt Jones was "throwing the ball better than he ever has" throughout training camp, and Dan Duggan of The Athletic shared this past Friday that the 2019 first-round draft pick tossed only two interceptions on 242 attempts during 11-on-11 sessions in camp.

Jones finished last regular season with just 15 passing touchdowns and seven scores on the ground. To compare, Mahomes led the league with 41 touchdowns through the air for the campaign. If utilizing different arm angles can help Jones produce "Mahomesian" numbers as it pertains to scoring, the Giants could do more than notch a single road playoff victory this coming January.
