Penguins’ Nick Bonino Named Team USA Captain
USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Penguins are set to have plenty of representation at the upcoming IIHF World Championship, and one name will be their countries leader.

Nick Bonino played three games in his return to the Penguins lineup and will now serve as Team USA’s captain at the tournament.

Team USA spoke highly of the veteran forward when they announced their lineup and upon arriving in Munich, Germany for practices, they named him captain.

The 2023 tournament will be Bonino’s third time representing Team USA and first time as captain.

Bonino’s first two trips to the tournament ended with Team USA taking home bronze.

Over his 14-year NHL career, Bonino has played in 823 games with 158 goals and 195 assists for 353 points.

During his first run with the Penguins, Bonino was an important piece to winning back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017.

Bonino’s second stint with the Penguins wasn’t as glorious; after three games, it was revealed that he suffered a lacerated kidney.

The injury kept Bonino from the lineup for the rest of the season, marking his last game on March 9.

Penguins’ goalie Casey DeSmith and forward Drew O’Connor are also set to play for Team USA at the World Championship tournament.
