Anthony Mackie jokes his Captain America action figure 'looks more like Jamie Foxx'

Anthony Mackie is the new Captain America—the first Black Captain America—but he had to playfully do a double-take to make sure Jamie Foxx hadn't stolen his gig.

Toward the end of Mackie's visit with The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Monday night, Colbert unboxed Mackie's Captain American action figure. The Emmy-winning host showed the 42-year-old actor all of the features before placing it in front of the camera so he could get a closer look through Zoom.

"From this distance, he looks more like Jamie Foxx to me," Mackie joked, then laughed. "That's dope, man. Yeah, that's amazing. I haven't seen it yet. I've never seen one of those."

Earlier in the interview, Mackie discussed just how much it means to him to be the first Black actor portraying the iconic Marvel superhero:

"It's interesting. It's humbling, really. It didn't hit me until [The Falcon and the Winter Soldier] came to conclusion Friday, and I watched it with my boys. There are no words to explain it. I remember it was 2008 when I first moved to Brooklyn, and I was walking down the street, and I saw this little kid. He had taken, like, a cereal box and cut eyes and put the cereal box on his head, like, spray-painted it blue and put an 'A' on it.

"I was like, 'Yo, what you doing, man?' And he was like, 'I'm fighting bad guys! I'm Captain America!' You know? To see that little kid and think about, you know, almost 13 years later where I am now in the universe, it's really humbling and exciting at the same time. 'Cause there is that significance to little kids around the world."

Mackie played Falcon/Sam Wilson in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which recorded an unprecedented debut on Disney Plus last month with its final episode dropping Friday (April 23). In the fifth episode, Wilson finally accepted the Captain America mantle. It was previously offered to him at the end of Avengers: Endgame (2019) by Chris Evans's Cap because he wished to retire happily back to the 1940s as Steve Rogers with his love Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). The Falcon and the Winter Soldier picked up where Endgame left off.

There had been speculation that Evans was set to reprise Captain America, whom he portrayed in eight films dating back to 2011, but those were squashed time and time again earlier this year. Mackie was officially unveiled Monday:

Mackie has played Falcon/Wilson in six films beginning with 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier
